Why I Chose This Cake Design for My 1:1 Baking & Decorating Class
When designing my beginner-friendly 1:1 baking and decorating class, I knew I wanted a project that would be more than just pretty, it needed to be purposeful. This cake design, with its bold colours, marbled fondant wrap details, and elegant finishing, ticks every box. It’s not only visually striking but also rich in learning opportunities, making it the ideal choice for students stepping into the world of cake artistry.
A Cake That Covers It All
From the moment you see it, this cake catches your eye, but what you don’t see at first glance is how many essential skills are packed into this one design. It allows me to guide students through a wide variety of techniques that form the foundation of cake decorating, including:
-
Perfecting cake layers and baking basics
-
Buttercream mastery: from making the perfect buttercream, understanding the different consistencies to achieving sharp edges
-
Working with fondant without fear: wrapping a section of the cake in fondant using the marbled technique.
-
Understanding cake composition: how to choose the front and back of your cake (yes, every cake has one!)
-
Floral preparation and arrangement
-
Creative finishing using decorative elements like edible pearls, sugar balls, and painted touches.
Letting Creativity Shine
One of my favourite parts of the class is the final segment, when my students are given the space to create freely. I provide all the decorative bits; gold leaf, beads, florals, textures, colours, and encourage them to explore their creativity. No two cakes ever look the same, and that's intentional. I want every student to walk out of my kitchen with a creation that is uniquely theirs, not just a replica.
This cake design acts as a canvas for them to experiment, make confident choices, and fall in love with the art of cake decorating.
Confidence with Fondant Starts Here
Fondant can be intimidating, especially for beginners. That’s exactly why I include it in this class, not in a way that overwhelms, but in a way that empowers. Students learn how to handle it properly, how to create that gorgeous marble effect, and how to wrap a section of their cake with precision and style.
By the end of the session, fondant isn’t a fear anymore, it’s just another tool in their creative toolkit.
Why This Cake Matters
This cake isn’t just a teaching aid, it is a confidence builder. It’s a reminder that learning cake design can be joyful, bold, hands-on, and empowering. It’s structured yet flexible, allowing each student to grasp core techniques while also expressing their own style.
That’s why I chose this design, and that’s why I teach this class.
